A Cape Winelands Wedding
The Cape Winelands are a popular wedding destination for both local and international bridal couples. The majestic mountains that usually surround these beautiful vineyards are a much loved backdrop for wedding photos. Some of the areas that make up the Cape Winelands include Somerset West, Franschhoek, Stellenbosch and Constantia so planning your wedding in the Winelands offers a wide variety of beautiful vineyards and wine farms to choose from. We take a look at some of these areas for their wedding occasion suitability:
1. Somerset West
Somerset West is a bustling town situated in the Hottentots Holland area, and is only a 30 minute drive from Cape Town. This makes it an attractive option for international tourists as they are able to explore Cape Town very easily too. Somerset West is only a 15 minute drive from Cape Town International Airport along the N2 freeway making it very accessible for guests. Somerset West also lies within easy reach of several beaches including Strand and False Bay. Some wine farms therefore not only have views of the mountain, but also views of the ocean such as Waterkloof Wine Estates, perched high on the Schapenberg on the outskirts of town. Additionally there is a wide variety of accommodation available to choose from in Somerset West including Bed & Breakfasts, self-catering flats and hotels. Planning a wedding in Somerset West is a great idea if you are planning on inviting guests who need to fly in and out again and will need transport as well as accommodation nearby.
Franschhoek is one of the oldest towns in South Africa and is famous for its beautiful mountain scenery, cuisine and fine wines. Franschhoek is further inland and about 75km’s from Cape Town. Planning a wedding here therefore may require more logistical organisation as well as preparing guests for the drive to and from the airport. A variety of accommodation is available in Franschhoek including a few award winning boutique hotels and guest houses. Planning a wedding in Franschhoek is a beautiful and very popular option but it doesn’t have sea views nor is it easily accessible from Cape Town and Cape Town International Airport.
Known as the City of Oaks, Stellenbosch is the country’s second oldest town and Wine & Gourmet Capital. It is surrounded by the mountainous nature reserves of Jonkershoek and Simonsberg. It is about an hour’s drive from Cape Town and has a variety of exquisite Cape Dutch, Georgian and Victorian architecture. Planning a wedding at Blaauwklippen Estate for example will allow you to enjoy a typical Cape Dutch venue. Stellenbosch has easy access to Cape Town International Airport and offers a selection of perfect accommodation, unfortunately without sea views.
Situated in Cape Town itself lies one of the oldest wine regions. The estate of Groot Constantia was established in 1684 and holds vast amounts of tradition, fame and respect in the wine industry. Constantia is regarded as one of the most affluent areas in South Africa and planning a wedding here will surely live up to high expectations. Access to the airport is convenient and accommodation is plentiful. It is a fantastic tourist destination should your wedding guests be visiting from abroad or another city.
