Waterkloof wins Trophy and Gold Medal at Decanter World Wine Awards
Circumstance Chenin Blanc 2009 voted Best SA Single Varietal
Waterkloof Estate has excelled at London’s 2011 Decanter World Wine Awards clinching a Gold medal and the Regional Trophy for Best South African White Single Varietal over £10 with two wines in the estate’s Circumstance range.
The trophy was awarded to the Circumstance Chenin Blanc 2009 with the Circumstance Syrah 2008 bringing home the gold medal. In total Waterkloof, known for its elegant European style wines and sustainable wine farming on the elevated outskirts of the Helderberg Winelands, won six medals and two commended awards, setting a personal best performance in this annual international wine competition.
This year, the 211 judges from all around the world including a fifth of the world’s population of Masters of Wine, top sommeliers, wine critics and wine writers, served on the tasting panels.
Waterkloof’s Circumstance wines are shaped by an amphitheatre of select, high and low altitude vineyards, where diverse soils, fanned by cooling False Bay breezes, ensure perfect conditions for slow ripening, allowing the grapes to develop their intense flavours, complexity and finesse.
“The distinctive character of each of our classic wines is defined in part by the unique symphony of fortuitous circumstances including soil, aspect and altitude, which all play a vital role in the making of a world-class wine – hence the name Circumstance,” explains winemaker Werner Engelbrecht.
The trophy winning, limited release Circumstance Chenin Blanc 2009 stems from old bush vines that have reached optimal balance in growth and production through time. The Chenin blanc grapes are of superb quality expressing their true varietal character with a wonderfully balanced natural acidity and terrific concentrated flavours.
The grapes were whole bunch pressed for the gentle extraction of the purest juices which were naturally fermented over a slow-paced period of 17 months to give the wine its richly layered fruit aromas and roundness. Only a light filtration was used prior to bottling.
The Circumstance Chenin Blanc 2009 is a complex wine that allures with a rich flavour spectrum of citrus, apple and honey, with some earthy minerality at the core. Further complexity can be expected as the wine ages. The wine pairs well with smoked trout or pork loin with sage and mushrooms.
This wine retails from R90 per bottle and is available directly from the Waterkloof cellar, at selected wine boutiques and leading fine dining restaurants worldwide.
