In our Wedding Planning Checklist 12-18 Months we discussed tasks such as booking your wedding venue. This could be a beach wedding venue, a Cape Winelands wedding venue, a garden wedding venue or a bush wedding venue. We also discussed your budget, your date, your guest list and whether you want a civil or church ceremony.

In this article on wedding planning we start inching closer to the actual day and it’s now time to focus on a few very personal choices. Here is a bit more detail on wedding planning with 9-12 months to go before your wedding:
1. Wedding Planning: Choose bridesmaids, best man and ushers
Many brides these days create special experiences when asking their friends to be their bridesmaids. In one example, the bride-to-be made boxes for each of her bridesmaids which contained sentimental trinkets, a note, a poem and photos. These were then hand delivered to the bridesmaid with a note asking them to be a bridesmaid. Of course this is a nice idea, but is definitely not expected. A simple discussion with your bridesmaid-to-be also usually does the trick. By asking the best man at this stage you are allowing him to have time to prepare his speech and the bachelor party. This lead time is often greatly appreciated.
2. Wedding Planning: Send out your Save the Date cards
By now you would have booked your wedding venue; set the date and chosen your guest list (download our handy wedding planning checklist for more). Now it’s time to send out your Save the Date cards. This can either be printed cards that are posted and delivered or an electronic Save the Date message which is emailed to your guests. Many couples also create websites for their wedding containing all the necessary information and use this as their Save the Date. Try it on wix.com. This can be a really fun and creative part of your wedding planning.
3. Wedding Planning: Choose and book your photographer and videographer
This is probably one of the most important areas of your wedding planning. You will want to capture your beautiful wedding day forever and be able to look back on the photos and videos for years to come. It is therefore vital to choose an experienced, reputable photographer and videographer. Perhaps even professionals that have taken shots at your particular wedding venue before. 4. Wedding Planning: Get your transport sorted
Decide on how you will be arriving at the church or wedding venue, as well as who will be driving. You will also need to arrange transport from the wedding venue to your hotel. Don’t forget to include transport for your bridesmaids as well as your parents, who will traditionally travel with you to the wedding venue.
5. Wedding Planning: Book your DJ and/or band
As in step 3 it’s important to book your DJ well in advance as the good ones tend to get booked up very quickly, especially if you plan to have your wedding in November or December.
6. Wedding Planning: Book your caterers and decide on your menu
If your chosen wedding venue includes catering, you will merely have to decide on a menu. This is a fun day out as you and your partner get to try a variety of options at the wedding venue. Most wedding venues allow a tasting day as part of the wedding venue package. If you need to hire external caterers make sure to use well known professionals that have catered to your required numbers and needs before. It is wise to contact a few previous clients just to make sure your catering is done without any hiccups.
7. Wedding Planning: Start looking at wedding dresses and work out what you like
Now it’s time for one of the most exciting parts of your wedding planning, the wedding dress! If you have an idea of what you like, make sure to take a picture with when you visit your wedding dress shops or the dressmakers you book an appointment with. Pinterest is a great resource as well as wedding gown websites and magazines. Remember, you can also buy second hand wedding dresses at a fraction of the cost or hire one for the day. There are many options when it comes to choosing the perfect wedding dress, try on as many dresses as you can. When you find the right one, you will know it’s the right one!
