For many couples, 2017 will be the year of ticking wedding necessities off a long and exciting list. And one of the first items to get organised is the wedding venue. We are seeing a number of interesting new wedding venue trends coming through that are perhaps worth considering when making the final decision.
1. Weekend weddings
A lot of planning and travel arrangements are required when you invite a large party of family and friends which has led to the weekend wedding trend.
This requires a wedding venue with accommodation capacity for all the guests, or at least sufficient accommodation within the wedding venue area. Bridal couples are either opting to have a light dinner on Friday night, followed by the wedding ceremony on the Saturday and a brunch to end off the weekend on the Sunday. Alternatively, the wedding takes place on the first night, with the remainder of the weekend spent enjoying the company of close friends and family in a relaxed setting.
This scenario does require a bit more logistical planning and cost for those who are going to have to travel some distance anyway, then it’s the ideal solution to make the most of the wedding. It also gives the bride and groom more chance to mingle with people they haven’t seen in quite some time, while really taking advantage of this momentous occasion.
2. Destination weddings
While weekend weddings can be organised close to home, the concept of ‘destination weddings’ is really building steam in 2017. This requires an enchanting wedding venue, possibly on an exotic island somewhere, and requires some serious travel arrangements for everyone attending the wedding. Tropical paradises like the Seychelles, Mauritius, Mexico, the Caribbean and the Bahamas are still extremely popular while places like Iceland, Canada and Italy are also coming out as favourite locales for couples looking for something different.
This can be an expensive option but does make for a truly magical experience with the wedding forming part of a holiday for everyone. It also lends itself to smaller, intimate wedding parties.
It’s generally encouraged to opt for wedding venues which offer an in-house wedding co-ordinator as it can be extremely difficult, not to mention costly, trying to source everything from afar.
3. Vineyards, beaches and forests
This year will see a move towards the natural element, drawing positive energy and inspiration from the outside world while unplugging from all technology. Bridal couples will ask that guests refrain from filming and photographing every element of the special day, rather living in the moment and sharing in the joy with the couple. And wedding venues will be positioned within the most scenic of natural settings such as vineyards, beaches and forests. The Western Cape will continue to grow in popularity as a wedding destination with its multitude of stunning wine farm wedding venues, white, sandy beaches and mesmerising forests.
4. Formal receptions
Although a touch of elegant rusticity is definitely still on point, there is a shift from the completely simplistic settings to the more elegant and opulent, timeless locations for wedding receptions. Manicured gardens, historical buildings, sophisticated setting and scenery are taking over from the makeshift home venue options. Throw out the hay bales and bring in the formal seating and table settings.
5. Vintage glamour
There’s no need to choose between a vintage and a more modern location and look for your Big Day as the latest wedding venue trend sees a careful combination of both styles. Modern, stark wedding venues can be stylishly warmed up with an introduction of ornate centrepieces and candelabras while an older, stone wedding venue can be modernised with simple twinkling lights.
6. Surprise venues
Couples are opting to really surprise their guests on all fronts with everything from the wedding favours to the venue itself. With a lot of imagination, any scenic plot of land or habitable building can be converted into a 2017 wedding dream, personalised to suit the bride and groom.
7. Lounge areas
Suited to both the pre-dinner cocktails as well as a great party rest area, comfortable lounge areas are becoming more favourable at wedding venues. A few lounge-style seats placed near the dancefloor will be well-used when the DJ starts up.
