We’re honoured to be featured in the line-up of 26 Rosé wines assessed by wine journalist Jamie Goode for the Sunday Express. In the ratings, our Circumstance Cape Coral Mourvèdre Rose 2020 scored 2nd place, just behind Spanish producer Lalomba in Rioja. We are also the only South African winery on the list.
Our Circumstance Cape Coral Mourvèdre is produced from grapes on the slopes of the Schapenberg as well as the rest of the Stellenbosch wine growing region, characterised by relatively mild winters and long, warm summers. The vines are cultivated under dryland conditions and planted in a combination of sandstone and deep red soils which provide adequate water for this late ripening varietal.
This is what Jamie had to say about the wine: “On low-yielding Mourvèdre (5 tons/hectare) pressed very gently whole bunch (juice yield 500 litres/ton). Wild ferment in large format oak. Pale coloured. Fresh, peppery and spicy on the nose, leading to a palate with some cherry and pear fruit, as well as a bit of lemon and some detailed peppery notes. This is really sophisticated with a juicy edge to the finely poised fruit. So expressive and elegant. 92/100”
